Business Books

The following books help you build the foundation for a successful venture by changing the way you think about wealth, entrepreneurship, and capitalism.

The E-Myth Revisited: Why Most Small Businesses Don’t Work and What to Do About It by Michael Gerber

First up, the business basics. This book helps you rethink your role as an entrepreneur. While most entrepreneurs think of themselves as brilliant conquerors, in reality, we’re technicians more so than superheroes. If you’ve got an entrepreneurial spirit, learn how to build a business instead of a job.

The 4-Hour Workweek: Escape 9-5, Live Anywhere, and Join the New Rich by Tim Ferris

Yes, the 4-hour workweek has been proven to be unrealistic. But Tim Ferris has great insight into how you can build systems and processes that allow you to step away from your business when the time is right. After all, isn’t that everyone’s end goal?

The Richest Man in Babylon by George S. Clason

This compilation of pamphlets distributed in 1926 helps you understand financial planning and personal wealth. Switch your mindset and start thinking about wealth in a positive way. If you believe you can be wealthy, happy, and successful, you’re more likely to achieve just that.

Rich Dad Poor Dad: What the Rich Teach Their Kids About Money That the Poor and Middle Class Do Not! by Robert Kiyosaki

How do you look at success? Do you respect the wealthy or do you villainize them? Kiyosaki challenges mainstream financial wisdom and passes down money lessons essential for financial peace.

Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand

While the only fiction book on this list, Atlas Shrugged is a classic defense on capitalism and free enterprise. This story challenges your thoughts on wealth-building and warns you of those in society who wish to tear your successes down. And if you get through the book, let Todd know your thoughts on the infamous question – who is John Galt?

Think And Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill

After interviewing 504 successful people including three presidents and businessmen from Ford to Rockefeller, Napoleon Hill boiled down a few key consistencies among the successful. He also broke down 13 steps to riches.

The Compound Effect: Jumpstart Your Income, Your Life, Your Success by Darren Hardy

And finally, the small steps. Have you ever attacked a personal or professional goal too quickly and found yourself on the burnout bench? In his book, Darren explains that every success in life is a result of small steps repeated over and over and over again. So take one success and break it down to its smallest component. By building on that small step more and more, Hardy teaches you how to win every day and eliminate bad behaviors.

Sales Focused

Next, let’s dive into a few sales-centric reads. Whether you realize it or not, everything in life is sales. From getting your kids to eat dinner to landing that job offer to avoiding scam artists.

Sell Or Be Sold: How To Get Your Way In Business And In Life by Grant Cardoon

Take a few tips from one of the greatest salesman. Cardoon outlines essential lessons in sales, including the importance of agreeing with the customer and remembering that if you can’t convince yourself, you’ll never convince others.

B2B Is Really P2P: How to Win With High Touch in a High Tech World by Frank Somma

While most people think sales is strictly business, Somma reminds us that it’s more about people than crunching numbers and perfecting prices. In his book, Somma breaks down top tips for building rapport. Also check out this episode of Entrepreneur Adventure where Somma outlines it all.

Value-Added Selling by Tom Reilly

Reilly’s book reminds us that it’s important to deposit value before making a withdrawal. Teaching distributors how to improve listings and boost sales can be the difference between an exclusivity agreement and another seller skating by. Getting people to trust and respect you is something Reilly writes about well and it’s essential for success no matter your trade.

Never Split The Difference: Negotiating As If Your Life Depended On It by Chris Voss

Also check out this phenomenal read by former hostage negotiator for the FBI, Chris Voss. After all, if you can negotiate with a terrorist, you can negotiate with anyone.

Virtual Freedom by Chris Ducker

Finally, let’s dive into outsourcing. As entrepreneurs, we want to do everything ourselves. But Chris Ducker reminds us that we need to hire out to move up. He discusses hiring virtual staff from the Philippines and putting systems in place that allow you to teach others.

announcer (00:01):
Welcome fellow entrepreneurs to the entrepreneur adventure podcast, where we talk about Amazon wholesale and how you can use it to build an eCommerce empire, a side hustle or anything in between. And now your host Todd Welch.

todd (00:17):
Today I have a really special one, a good one. I am going to be showing you my top 14 books that I recommend and that I have read. That’s helped shape my personal life, my business life, my thoughts about money. And I have no doubt that if you dive into even a few of these, it’s really going to help you advance your business career, your thoughts on money, building wealth, building a business, and just increasing your overall life and lifting you up. That’s what a lot of these books do. I’ve got a few different categories, right? So they’re about building your business, building your thoughts on money, wealth, and success, and also sales, which is a really big one. Even if you’re not in sales, right? We might not think about selling on Amazon as being in the business of sales, but it really is about sales.

todd (01:20):
Life is about sales. So you need to know and understand sales, what it means to be wealthy, successful, and happy, and how to build a real business, because that’s what we’re doing here. So in this episode, we’re going to touch on the books that have helped shape my life, shaped my business, shaped my success, and will help you as well. So entrepreneuradventure.com /44, you can get links to every one of these books. So you can jump over to Amazon and purchase these books. Whether you’re getting a hard copy or you’re getting audible, you can listen to it for me. I like both because audible, you can just listen to anywhere, right? And a book though, for me is more, you absorb more of it because you’re forced to focus on it, but it’s really nice audible because you can just listen to it anytime, while you’re running, while you’re jogging, while you’re working out while you’re driving, whatever the case may be.

todd (02:24):
So are you ready for this? Let’s go ahead and dive into all these books. Again, entrepreneuradventure.com/ 44 to get a link to all of these books. So let’s go ahead and dive into the first one.

todd (02:38):
So these first books that I’m going to dive into are overall business books to get the understanding of how to run a successful business. If you don’t have a platform to build on this is like your base, right? The base of your pyramid of success is going to be how to build a business and how to think about and understand money and wealth and success. If you don’t have that foundation, nothing else is going to matter. So the very first book that I want to talk about is E-Myth revisited why most small businesses don’t work and what to do about it. And this one is by Michael Gerber.

todd (03:25):
So this is a fantastic book for learning the basics of how a business should work. And as you can see, I’ve got my bookmark in this. I’m actually rereading this right now, a great book talking about the foundations of business and how to think about it. So it really goes through the idea of when you and I decide to become entrepreneurs, right? We have this grand vision, this grand idea, entrepreneurs battling the world and achieving success, tearing down boundaries and being like a superhero, right? We’ve got the superhero pose entrepreneur across our chest. And we’re going to take on the world when in reality, most of us are some kind of technician and we’re doing the work, right? We’re figuring out how to sell on Amazon. We’re fixing computers, we’re fixing cars or whatever the case may be. We’re knitting sweaters. And we think we can sell sweaters.

todd (04:36):
We’re technicians who have an entrepreneurial seizure, right? Or like, Oh my God, why am I working for this person? They don’t know what they’re doing. I’m doing all the work. I should start my own business. And I can do a lot better than what they’re doing and have freedom and as well. And what you end up having is instead of building a business, we build a job. I’ve done this in the past. I built a job for myself in the computer repair business that I have. And we go through these stages in the beginning, yes, business is a lot of work, but some of the most successful businesses were started by people who had no clue about the business they were going into. They seen an opportunity. They didn’t know how to do the work. So they may be brought on a partner or brought in employees who could do that work.

todd (05:33):
They seen the opportunity. Now that’s not most businesses. Most business startups are started from a technician who want to figure out how to do this on their own and build a business around it. And that’s where a lot of people get stuck. And E- myth revisited really helps you grow out of that and think about your business in a way that it doesn’t require you to be in it. Think of like any business that runs really well, franchise business. Mcdonald’s Nike, pretty much any of your favorite businesses are franchise style built businesses, where there systems in place that allow that business to function and you can take an employee, put it into the system. They can follow the steps, do it, learn it and master it. And if that’s how you want to build your business as well. So E-Myth revisited a great book for learning how to successfully run your business.

todd (06:38):
Highly recommend that book. Next book that we have here is the four hour workweek by Tim Ferriss. And this is escape the nine to five live anywhere and join the new rich. So another book to teach you about working in building your way out of the business, not building yourself a job, but building a business that can run on it’s on right. They call it the four hour work week. And Tim Ferris has admitted. There’s no such thing as the actual four hour workweek, he works a lot more than four hours per week, but the headline helps sell the book. And it’s really about building the systems and processes in your business. So you don’t have to be there all the time. Isn’t that what we’re all trying to do, right? We’re trying to build a business, gain success, gain the income and the ability to do anything, live life on our own terms, how we want to do it.

todd (07:41):
Maybe you want to take a four week vacation and head off to Hawaii or Italy or whatever the case may be. If you build a job, you’re not going to be able to do that. You need to be there for the business to run because you’re the one doing all the work. If you build a business that can run without you, it doesn’t mean you’re not going to be there working in the business. You can, but it means that if you want to leave, the business keeps going and keeps going and keeps running. So another great book for building the foundations of a successful business, probably one of the best selling books of all time as well. And a great read. I highly recommend that one as well. Next up here is an audio book that I read, and this is the richest man in Babylon by George Clayson.

todd (08:38):
So this is a book from 1926, which was a series of informational pamphlets, distributed by banks and insurance companies. And so I’m reading the summary here, cause it’s been a little while since I’ve read this book. By 1927, several of these pamphlets been compiled into a book and this collection has been in print ever since it has helped millions of people and has been hailed as the greatest of all inspirational works on the subject of thrift financial planning and personal wealth. So another book that teaches you how to understand financial planning and personal wealth, it’s, it’s more of like a mental book, right? A lot of these are mental books because so many people don’t understand money. They have a negative aspect of money, a negative aspect of wealth and success. So much of our society now talks about how horrible business people are while we praise musicians and actors and stuff.

todd (09:42):
A lot of times who maybe have not a great personal life, but they have a great song or a great movie or something like that. And we look down upon business, people who have built massive businesses, massive wealth for themselves, employed thousands of people. And we really need to reverse that mindset and think about it in a different way and understand that money is not negative or positive. It’s all about how you think about that money and how you handle it in your personal life. So the richest man in Babylon is a classic book. It’s not very long. The audio book is four hours and four minutes long, but it helps you understand personal wealth and success and money so that you can bring it and materialize it in your own world. If you don’t believe that you can be successful and believe that you can be wealthy, the odds of you being successful and wealthy and happy go way down.

todd (10:48):
So another fantastic book, the richest man in Babylon, definitely check that one out for sure. Next rich dad, poor dad by Robert Kiyosaki, what the rich teach their kids about money that the poor and middle class do not. So another one here on how you think about money, and this is another one of the most successful best selling books out there. There’s a lot of people that talk bad about this book. They say, it’s not real that it wasn’t an actual true story. But Robert Kiyosaki says that it was a true story in that it’s teaching you how to think about money, that he had a mentor that taught him how to properly think about money. Do you look at success as something negative or something positive? And it’s a really good book. It’s one of the first books that I read teaching me how to think about money that shaped my thoughts to this day to help me build more success and move forward in life.

todd (12:01):
I’ll just read a real quick, a little bit from the summary. And it says rich dad, poor dad will explode the myth that you need to earn a high income to become rich challenged, to believe that your house is an asset show parents, why they can’t rely on the school system to teach their kids about money, define once and for all an asset and a liability really important to understand that teach you what to teach your kids about money for their future financial success. Robert Kiyosaki has challenged and changed the way tens of millions of people around the world. Think about money with perspectives that often contradict conventional wisdom. Robert has earned reputation for straight talk irreverence and courage. He is regarded worldwide as a passionate advocate for financial education. And I definitely agree with all of that, a really great book to get your mind right about money building wealth, building success as well.

todd (13:01):
So definitely highly recommend rich dad, poor dad. I’ve got that in the audio book and the physical copy as well. Next up Atlas shrugged by Ayn Rand. And this is a super long book. It’s actually a fictional book, but it is a fantastic book to teach you how to think about success and money and building the life that you want and how ever people in society will try to tear that down, take it away from you because they’re not able to do it themselves. They don’t see the work that goes into building a business. There’s so many people out there that don’t understand the work that goes into business and they just want to tear it down. So Atlas shrugged is like the apitomy of fictional books on business. And it’s just a fantastic story. A great read, very long book, 62 hours, almost 63 hours in length, but a fantastic book.

todd (14:14):
And it’s actually been made into a movie. If you don’t want to read the book or listen to the book, check out the movie, Atlas shrugged as well. There’s actually a trilogy of these books, a fantastic series of books that I’ve read on the mindset of money building success and how others will try to take that from you because they don’t understand. And you may not understand what it takes to build success, build a business and things like that as well. So just reading the publisher summary here in a scrap peep, within an abandoned factory, the greatest invention in history lies dormant in unused by what fatal error of judgment has its value gone unrecognized. It’s a brilliant inventor punished rather than rewarded for his efforts. So this book really talks about government and things like that as well. And thinking about government in a different way, in defense of those greatest of human colors, qualities that have made civilization possible.

todd (15:19):
One man sets out to show what would happen to the world. If all the heroes of innovation and industry went on strike, is he a destroyer or elaborator? And why does he fight his hardest battle? Not against his enemies, but against the woman He loves. Tremendous in scope and breathtaking in a suspense. Atlas shrugged is Ayn rand, Magnus Opus, and electrifying moral defense of capitalism and free enterprise, which, an ideological movement and gain millions of loyal fans around the world.

todd (15:54):
And one thing that I will ask you out there, and if you know what I’m talking about, leave your comment down below, or shoot me an email. And once you read this book, you’ll understand, but who is John Galt? You may not understand, but read the book and you’ll understand it is a fantastic quote. And one you’ll find t-shirts to take a look for t-shirts who is John Galt? They’re all over.

todd (16:26):
It defines Atlas shrugged. And the whole thing that they’re trying to portray in this book. It’s fantastic book, highly recommended. Alright, next one. Another mentality book. When it comes to money think and grow rich by Napoleon Hill. This is a classic where the author actually interviewed 504 successful people, including Ford Wrigley, Wanamaker, Eastman, Rockefeller, Edison, Woolworth Darbo, and Morgan, and many others and including three United States presidents. And he did this over the course of 20 years and basically boiled it down to what was their success, what brought them success and allowed them to achieve the great success that they did. So it boils down to another book on mindset and how you think about success. Let me just read a little bit here. Thinking grow rich is the number one inspirational and motivational classic for individuals who are interested in furthering their lives and reaching their goals by learning from important figures in history, the 13 steps to riches described in this audio book offer the shortest, dependable philosophy of individual achievement ever presented for the benefit of the man or woman who is searching for definite goal in life.

todd (17:57):
It comes directly from the experience of hundreds of America’s most successful men. So another fantastic book on building wealth, building success, setting goals, and just a boiling down of 504 successful people in the main 13 steps to building success in your life. Fantastic book, highly recommend that one as well. Next book that I love the compound effect by Darren Hardy, jumpstart, your income, your life, and your success, and what this book really boils down to is how every success in your life is just a series of steps repeated over and over and over compounding on top of each other. That’s why it’s called the compound effect. So a lot of us try to jump into something and be like, okay, I’m going to do everything like exercise, right? You decide that you’re going to get fit. So you’re like, I’m going to run every morning and I’m going to go to the gym for three hours every single day.

todd (19:12):
And of course, after a few weeks of that or less, that starts breaking down. You miss a day, you get down on yourself. And before you know it, you’re back on the couch, watching Netflix, eating chips and things like that. So the compound effect helps you understand the idea that you need to build on top of little successes, little wins. It’s just a small little things that you do every day over and over and over that builds on top of themselves to find success. Whether it’s in business, whether it’s in exercise and fitness, whether it’s in relationships, whatever it is in life, break them down to their smallest component and start small start basic and just build on top of that every single day compound and keep building up to success, right? As you build on each little step over and over and over, it becomes a larger and larger and larger success.

todd (20:16):
So another fantastic book that I have really loved, it says it teaches you strategies of how to win every time, eradicating the bad habits that derail your progress. Painlessly installing the few key disciplines required for major breakthroughs where real lasting keys to gaining and sustaining motivation, capturing the elusive awesome force of momentum, the acceleration secrets of super achievers. Inside You’ll learn how to get the success you desire and the life you deserve. So another fantastic book that I highly recommend on getting your mind, right? Building on each little success that you’re going to achieve as you move through life. All right, so now these next few books are going to be sales books because sales is one of the biggest and most important things. Once you have your mind right on success and understanding that you can achieve success, money’s not a bad thing.

todd (21:22):
Building wealth is not a bad thing. And in fact, by being rich, being wealthy, being successful, you can help more people and achieve more of the things that you want in life. Whether that’s helping an organization donating to organizations, whatever the case may be, you have to learn how to sell. So these next books are going to be on that. And this first one, and you can see all my notes that I’ve made in there sell or be sold, how to get you’re way in business and in life by Grant Cardoon one of the greatest salesmens in history, fantastic book, understanding how to sell people on your idea on whatever you’re trying to sell. The idea of selling is one that yeah. Is super important to learn. And you can see I’ve got tons of different bookmarks in here. And like, for example, right here, this first one, if you won’t buy it yourself, then you’re not sold yourself.

todd (22:34):
If you can’t pass the simple test of being willing to buy your own product, you’ll never be able to sell others in large numbers. Let’s flip to another one here that I bookmarked, always agree with. The customer is the single most important and the most commonly violence. I had a rule in all the selling. If you want agreement, you’ve got to be agreeable. Now that doesn’t mean that the customer is always right, because the customer isn’t always right, but you always have to agree with them first. So just tons of these great little things that you need to know and understand to get people to know like and trust so that they’re going to buy from you. A massive action equals new problems. I watch sales people make a few phone calls, send it a few pieces of mail and then stop to take

todd (23:27):
a coffee break and gossip about the latest news in the local paper. When they sit down and chatter about how business is slow and how the phone or prospecting don’t get them results. So massive action to get things done. The people who are not being successful are not putting in the work to get it done. So fantastic book on selling a high level version of selling at the beginning, and then really dive into the details on selling and knowing how to motivate people, to agree with you, understand what you’re trying to sell and get them to the point of saying yes to you and buying from you. So fantastic book on selling. Alright, next book B2B is really P to P by Frank Somma, how to win with high touch in a high tech world? B2B business to business is really person to person. So this book is all about how to sell by being personal with the other person.

todd (24:37):
So just a little bit from the back cover, whether you’re seasoned sales, vete ran sales leader, or a gen next college grad just starting out, you’ll find tools, techniques, and best practices organized around Frank’s three guiding principles, personal responsibility, gaining rapport and desire to win. Now, a lot of this has to do with like in-person sales and things like that and business to business sales. But what’s fantastic about this book. And I actually interviewed Frank on one of our earlier podcasts. I’ll put the number of that podcast right here on the screen. So you can check that out if you like, but it’s about building a rapport with the customer. So that again, they know like, and trust you. A lot of these sales books are similar with different tactics and things that you can do to try to get the customer to understand and trust you.

todd (25:39):
And if they don’t trust you in like you, then the odds are very slim that they’re going to buy from you. So there’s all these little tactics that you can do to get them to know like, and trust you. Of course, you need to be selling a product that is going to help the customer and make things better for them. That’s what it is all about. And you know, there’s a lot of people out there that might sell stuff they don’t believe in. If you don’t believe in what you’re selling, it’s going to be very hard for you. So again, a great book. B2B is really P to P great book on selling. I highly recommend this one as well. Next up value added selling by Tom Riley, how to sell more profitably, confidently and professionally by competing on value, not price. A lot of these books are not going to directly pertain to opening up an account with a brand to get more products to sell on Amazon, right?

todd (26:39):
Because that’s what we’re doing too. If listening to this most likely, but they’re all about gaining the trust and respect and getting people to agree with you and value added selling is fantastic in teaching you how to add value to other people and how to build that value on what you are going to provide them. So for us in the world of selling on Amazon, maybe it’s teaching them how to make their listing better. So it sells more, take better photography, reply to reviews that are negative, turn them into positives and things like that, or just overall helping them sell more of their products on Amazon. That’s what we’re trying to do when we’re trying to sell a brand to open up an account and allow us to sell on Amazon. We’re trying to sell them that we’re going to be good for their business, and we’re going to help them sell more.

todd (27:47):
We’re going to buy more product from them. You’re not just going to be the 30th seller on a listing. You’re building value, helping them actually sell more, not just be another seller. That’s what brands are usually looking for. So this is a great book, just to read a quick little bit from the back here, concerns of overpriced or the largest thing or barrier to success for most salespeople. But despite what you might think, it isn’t the customers who worry most about price. It’s the salespeople, it’s the salesperson who’s worrying the most about the price. Value added selling shows you how to deemphasize price in your selling methodology and craft solutions that satisfy your customer’s concerns, providing them with the value. They expect a straightforward market proven approach for selling customers on the inherent value of your entire product package, your product and your company, and the personalized attention only you can provide the strategic out program.

todd (28:49):
Outlines will allow you to orient your pitch to the customer’s actual needs, not the perception of those needs. Pick up on the customer’s clues to determine the benefits he or she requires quickly and dramatically improve both your clothes and repeat business ratio. So at first glance reading that you may think, well, what does that have to do with me selling on Amazon? But in reality, selling is everything in life. Whether you are trying to convince someone to allow you to sell on Amazon, you’re trying to convince your kids, go to bed at a certain time or do their homework, or you’re buying a car. You’re buying a big screen TV, knowing and understanding sales will help you in all aspects. Even if you’re not selling in your own life, someone is going to be selling you. And if you know what they’re doing to try to sell you, you can be better at selling them instead.

todd (29:47):
So super important to learn sales in your life. All right, so one more sales book here, and I’ve got a whole bunch of them, their sales books that are not making this list, but I am always reading sales books. I’m reading one right now called the Wolf of wall street. Another great book on selling, but this one here is never split the difference by Chris Voss negotiating as if your life depended on it. And this one is unique. And I really like it because he is actually a former international hostage negotiator for the FBI. And so in this book, he talks about the way that he negotiated with terrorists and hostage, shakers, and things like that, to break them down, gain their trust and their understanding and get them to give up the hostages or come out and without any violence and safety.

todd (30:51):
And so it’s a fantastic book at negotiating and makes you really think about it in a different way. And again, sales negotiating, just the most important thing. One of the most important things in life after knowing and understanding the, and having the right mental attitude, a wealth and success and personal finance. So fantastic book. I really love it. It’s really engaging, really pulls you in and never really a dull moment in listening to that book, because it tells these stories of all these hostage situations and things like that. So fantastic book really you in and gets you learning a ways to negotiate and sell last, but not least here is virtual freedom by Chris Ducker, how to work with virtual staff to buy more time, become more productive and build your dream business. So really this book is about hiring employees to work for you in your business, set up the systems in your business so that you can plug in employees so that you can move to a higher level in the business, right?

todd (32:11):
You don’t want to always be in our world. For example, going through spreadsheets and tracking, trying to find products that you can sell in the beginning. Yes, you’re doing that, but in, you’re going to very quickly want to build your way out of that. You’re not gonna, I don’t want to be sifting through those spreadsheets, filling out the forms, open up accounts and managing maybe replying to emails on Amazon from customers when 90% of those emails, it’s just the same thing over and over. People can reply to that. This is about hiring a virtual staff from the Philippines as what Chris Ducker recommends. And that’s what I recommend as well works great for me. Now, he talks about his business that he’s built to get you virtual staff or virtual employees, and it’s a great way to take work off of your plate. So it’s a fantastic book.

todd (33:13):
It really doesn’t just teach you how to hire a virtual assistant, but also how to build your business around systems and put systems in place and teaching someone else to do that so that you can then move to a higher level in your business. Like we talked earlier about the four hour work week, right? Build your way, work your way out of your business so that it can run without you. That’s the goal of your business is to have systems and processes in place so that if you disappeared, the business would just keep going and building, getting better and growing. And so another book about that, but also how to hire those people to start taking your place. So fantastic book on that. All right. So those are some of the top books that I recommend you check out. What do you think? Do you agree?

todd (34:08):
Do you disagree? Do you have books that you prefer over these, or maybe you think I need to check out and read? Let me know, please, in the comments, I always love good book recommendations. If you’re listening to this on podcasts, head on over to entrepreneur adventure.com, send me an email head on over to entrepreneur venture.com/facebook. Leave a comment there, let me know what books, you know, like and have helped you build success in your life. I really want to know so that I can read them as well. Always looking for new, really good books. So, all right. I hope you enjoyed that. Again.
